In a recent statement, Nvidia Corp said that it has developed in collaboration with U.K.’s University of Bristol to build a new supercomputer using exclusively its newly created CPU/GPU infrastructure. That is a major hit to Intel Corp and AMD which up to now have shared this market segment almost exclusively.
Nvidia is best known for its leading graphics processing units (GPUs), which are in high demand because they can be used to speed up artificial intelligence work, and CryptoMining, which is now less in demand. OpenAI's ChatGPT, for example, was created with thousands of Nvidia GPUs.
But Nvidia's GPU chips are typically paired with what is called a central processing unit (CPU), a market that has been dominated by Intel and AMD for decades. This year, Nvidia has started shipping its own competing CPU chip called Grace, which is based on technology from SoftBank Group Corp-owned Arm Ltd. Arm LTD is an Oxford based company, best known for the design of CPUs for smartphones.
Nvidia’s latest CPU is called Grace and does not require any GPU which is a major technology advancement. The newly built CPU will be used by Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co to build a computer called Isambard 3. The latter is built in collaboration with the University of Bristol and its main purpose for now climate science and drug discovery research, among other things.
Knowledge is power.
